WHAT IS
MOTHER'S DAY

Mothers day celebrates the special bond that exists between mothers and their children. Mother's day is a special day to honour and appreciate our mothers. It celebrates the incredible role that mothers play in our lives, both physical and emotional. It honours all the women who have contributed to our society in some way, be it through their work or love life. In many cultures, Mothers' Day is also a time for families to gather together and celebrate motherhood. Mothers are responsible for caring for us during infancy, teaching us how to interact with the world around us, and guiding us through adolescence and adulthood.

ORIGIN OF MOTHERS DAY:

Ann Reeves Jarvis, born on May 12th 1881 in a small town in Maine, was the author of "Mothers and Others: A Book About Women" published posthumously in 1937.
The book is an exploration of women's lives from prehistory to the present day, beautifully written with philosophical undertones. Jarvis herself identifies as a feminist and believes that motherhood should not be conflated with femininity or womanhood. She writes eloquently about how mothers connect with their children on many levels- mentally, emotionally, physically - and argues that mothers are essentially responsible for human civilization.
On Mothers Day 2017 Ann Reeves Jarvis' son donated her unpublished manuscripts to The University of Kansas Library Special Collections where they will be accessible for scholars worldwide to study and explore further. They say "her words take us into homes we never saw; unlock hidden vistas; reveal unsuspected corners." We couldn't agree more!
